Smart Update Manager
Smart Update Manager (SUM) is an on-premises firmware management solution that orchestrates firmware updates across managed HPE servers. It provides a scalable, automated framework for managing firmware lifecycle operations across multiple servers.
By integrating proven capabilities from HPE Compute Ops Management and HPE OneView, SUM enhances the firmware update experience and delivers a consistent, extensible firmware management platform.
The solution is built on a modular architecture that standardizes firmware update workflows, provides a consistent firmware management experience across HPE solutions, and simplifies integration and operational management. As a result, SUM helps minimize operational risks associated with inconsistent firmware deployments, firmware states, and update outcomes across different environments.
To further improve operational reliability, the solution employs standardized processes, validation steps, and controlled orchestration to deliver predictable updates at scale.
Legacy and Next-Generation SUM
SUM 20.x and later releases represent the next-generation SUM, while SUM 12.x and earlier releases represent legacy SUM. In this guide, the term next-generation SUM is used only when it is necessary to distinguish SUM 20.x from the legacy SUM. Otherwise, the product is referred to as Smart Update Manager (SUM).
Considerations
SUM uses TCP port 63002. Earlier versions of SUM also use this port. As only one application can use the port at a time, next-generation SUM and legacy SUM versions cannot run simultaneously on the same system.
Before launching next-generation SUM, stop any legacy SUM instance and verify that TCP port 63002 is available.
