Managing servers

Smart Update Manager (SUM) supports the following server management methods:

Remote servers through HPE iLO

Use this method to discover, onboard, and manage remote HPE servers by entering a single iLO IP address or a range of iLO IP addresses in the UI. SUM communicates with the target iLO over the network and uses the provided iLO credentials to onboard the server and perform firmware lifecycle operations.

Localhost server

Use this method for the server on which SUM is installed. When the SUM service starts, it automatically attempts to discover and onboard the localhost server by using in-band communication with the local iLO. If a supported local iLO is detected and the required in-band components are available, the localhost server is automatically added to Servers page. The server is then available for firmware lifecycle operations directly from the host system.

NOTE
Localhost operations use in-band communication through the local iLO and do not require a network connection to the local iLO.
